Illinois State Police are seeking public assistance in unraveling the mystery behind a crash on the Edens Expressway that claimed the life of 35-year-old Joseph Wheeler earlier this week. Wheeler, described by friends and family as a kind and joyful individual, died Tuesday morning after his car collided with a concrete barrier near Winnetka Road.
Authorities reported that Wheeler’s Toyota Rav4 displayed minimal damage, apart from a large hole in the front windshield and damage to the driver’s side window and side mirror. The unusual nature of the damage has left investigators questioning what caused the fatal injuries that resulted in Wheeler’s death.
Police say Wheeler was driving to work when his vehicle struck the barrier. He was discovered with a severe neck wound, bleeding heavily at the scene. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The crash has left friends and family devastated as they remember Wheeler as a man who brought light and warmth to everyone he met.
Wheeler’s longtime friend, Jose Francisco Orozco-Garcia, expressed disbelief at the sudden loss. “He always had a big smile, always showed his front teeth every time,” Orozco-Garcia said. “He’d come at you with open arms. He was that type of person.”
The two friends met during their high school years at Evanston Township High School and remained close ever since. Orozco-Garcia recalled speaking with Wheeler the night before the crash, describing the tragedy as surreal. “It’s just crazy how you meet someone, and you never know how much time you have with them,” he said.
The crash scene left investigators puzzled due to the nature of the damage to Wheeler’s car. A large hole on the driver’s side windshield raised questions about what might have caused it. The lack of significant structural damage to the vehicle added to the mystery. Police are exploring various possibilities, including whether debris from another vehicle played a role.
Orozco-Garcia speculated about the unusual circumstances. “It’s, like, horrific. It’s honestly some, like, ‘Final Destination’ thing, where it’s like, was there a truck in front of him that had rocks?” he said, emphasizing the need for answers.
Wheeler’s family has hired an attorney to assist with the investigation as they seek clarity about what led to his death. They issued a heartfelt statement honoring Wheeler’s memory: “Joe brought warmth and kindness wherever he went. His generosity of spirit, genuine smile, and unwavering devotion to those he cared for will be fondly remembered.”
Illinois State Police are urging anyone with information about the crash to come forward. They are particularly interested in any dash camera footage from vehicles traveling on the Edens Expressway near Winnetka Road on Tuesday morning. For Orozco-Garcia and Wheeler’s family, the loss is immeasurable. “He just became an uncle,” Orozco-Garcia shared, his voice filled with emotion. “It just kind of hits a little different when you know he’s not going to be coming through your door.”
As the investigation continues, the hope remains that someone will provide the crucial information needed to piece together the events leading up to the crash. The incident serves as a somber reminder of how fleeting life can be and the importance of vigilance on the road.
