President Joe Biden hailed former President Jimmy Carter as a beacon of “simple decency” in a heartfelt tribute following the announcement of Carter’s death at the age of 100. Speaking from St. Croix, where he is vacationing, Biden reflected on Carter’s legacy as a man whose life was defined not by his words but by his actions.

Carter, who passed away peacefully in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, was surrounded by family at the time of his death. As the 39th president of the United States, Carter achieved the milestone of being the longest-living U.S. president in history. Yet, it was his post-presidency accomplishments and enduring humility that Biden emphasized in his remarks.

“In today’s world, some may see Jimmy Carter as a figure of a bygone era,” Biden said, describing Carter’s steadfast honesty, character, and humility. “But I see him as a man not only of our time but for all times. We would all do well to be a little more like Jimmy Carter.”

Biden reminisced about his personal connection with Carter, dating back over six decades. Notably, Biden was the first sitting senator to endorse Carter’s 1976 presidential campaign, drawn not only to his policies but to the integrity and honor he embodied. Both one-term presidents, Carter and Biden, shared a deep commitment to working-class Americans and a belief in the fundamental right to equal opportunity.

“He taught Sunday school long after leaving the White House, and his faith wasn’t just a personal virtue—it was a guiding principle in his service to others,” Biden remarked. “Jimmy Carter lived a life of meaning and purpose, rooted in principles of faith and humility.”

Beyond his presidency, Carter’s humanitarian work left an indelible mark on the world. From eradicating diseases and advocating for human rights to personally constructing homes for the homeless through Habitat for Humanity, Carter demonstrated the transformative power of action. His relentless dedication to fostering peace, advancing civil liberties, and ensuring fair elections was a testament to his global vision for justice and equality.

Biden also acknowledged Carter’s resilience in the face of personal and health struggles, particularly his nearly decade-long battle with cancer. “He was just as courageous in his fight against cancer as he was in everything else he faced in life,” Biden said, drawing a parallel to his own family’s experiences with the disease.

Reflecting on the support the Carters extended after the loss of his son Beau Biden, the president expressed profound gratitude. “They helped us heal,” he said. “Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter understood the pain and found ways to offer comfort to others even in their suffering.”

Biden underscored Carter’s enduring relevance as a moral compass for the nation. When asked about the lessons President-elect Donald Trump might draw from Carter’s example, Biden responded with a single word: “Decency.”

“Can you imagine Jimmy Carter walking by someone in need without stopping to help? Can you imagine him judging someone by how they look or talk? I can’t,” Biden said. He highlighted Carter’s embodiment of the values enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, affirming that America must continue to champion these ideals.

Carter, Biden concluded, “was a man worth looking to—a shining example of what it means to lead with integrity and serve with compassion.” As the world mourns the loss of one of its most cherished statesmen, Biden’s words serve as both a tribute and a call to honor Carter’s legacy by striving to be better, kinder, and more just.
